The Great Coffee Break was an online escape room game made for Eight O’Clock Coffee and designed by Escape the Room. It ran as a sweepstakes across the United States from June 17 to August 11, 2018, and eight players won a year of free groceries ($8,000 each).
The game
- Escape the roastery. Set in an animated, made-up coffee roastery, the game had players help bags of Eight O’Clock escape by exploring its rooms, finding clues and solving coffee-themed puzzles.
- A solo escape room. It was built to bring the feeling of a real escape room to a single player, on desktop or phone.
- Scan the bag. Scanning any Eight O’Clock package with the Shazam app opened the game, which made it the first augmented-reality-triggered game from Escape the Room. Players could also go straight to GreatCoffeeBreak.com.
- Play to enter. Signing up with Google or Facebook gave a first entry, each level unlocked earned more, and inviting friends added a few more.
The campaign was backed by in-store and digital ads, social media and PR.
My part
I worked on it at Libéo as a front-end developer. The game was built with Phaser.js and ran in the browser on desktop and mobile. It went offline when the contest ended.
